Best smart locks for mountain STRs with spotty Wi-Fi

Mountain homes lose internet. Storms, a tripped breaker, a router that needs a power cycle, or a rural ISP outage. The lock question that matters is simple: if the Wi-Fi is down when the guest arrives, does their code still open the door? For the locks below, the answer is yes, as long as the code got onto the lock (or can be checked by the lock) before the outage.
How codes actually reach the lock
Codes stored on the lock (Schlage Encode, Yale Assure Lock 2): your PMS or app pushes the code to the lock over Wi-Fi ahead of time. Once it is there, the keypad works offline. Hospitable says it sends codes to Schlage, Yale, August, Igloo and Nuki locks 3 days before they activate, so a same-day outage usually does not lock a guest out. A multi-day outage before a booking can.
Offline algorithm codes (igloohome algoPIN): the lock never needs internet. The app generates a time-limited PIN that the lock can verify by itself, similar to a bank one-time-password token.
The lock works with no Wi-Fi or cellular at all; you create codes from your phone anywhere you have signal, and guests just type them in, no app. Things to know from igloohome's own docs: codes longer than 24 hours must be used once within the first 24 hours to activate (a guest who arrives a day late can get stuck), a lock holds 199 PIN codes max, and you only get a few unique codes per exact time window. Hospitable integrates with several igloohome models, some of which need the Igloo Bridge for Wi-Fi features.
Built-in Wi-Fi, no hub, up to 100 access codes, four AA batteries rated up to about six months. Schlage says programmed codes keep working without internet; you lose remote changes, scheduling and notifications until it reconnects, and the lock-history log syncs later. Watch out: a lock that cannot find Wi-Fi keeps searching and drains batteries much faster, so check batteries after any long outage. Hospitable supports the Encode and Encode Plus, but not the Schlage Arrive line.
Bluetooth built in; remote access needs a Wi-Fi, Z-Wave or Matter module (sold separately). Codes are stored locally on the lock, so the keypad keeps working when the internet is down. The modular radio is handy if you later move a cabin onto a Z-Wave alarm hub instead of Wi-Fi. Yale notes Wi-Fi models need a 2.4GHz network.
Mountain checklist
Keep a backup way in. A keyed cylinder or a coded lockbox with a spare key, so a dead lock is a phone call, not a locksmith at 11pm.
Batteries: put a battery swap on every second or third turnover checklist, and after any outage.
Send codes early. Make sure your PMS pushes codes days ahead (Hospitable does 3 days) and that your guest message goes out after the code exists.
Power-cycle-proof the router. A cheap smart plug that reboots the router, or a router with auto-recovery, fixes most "Wi-Fi is down" calls.
Check PMS support before you buy. Not every model from a brand integrates (Schlage Arrive is the common trap with Hospitable).
Quick decision
No reliable internet at all, or a cabin on a generator โ igloohome.
Normal mountain Wi-Fi that drops now and then โ Schlage Encode, plus a lockbox backup.
You run Z-Wave or an alarm hub, or might later โ Yale Assure Lock 2 with the matching module.
